On 2 May 1808 the people of Madrid rose against occupation. Under the brick arch in Malasaña stand Daoíz and Velarde, the artillery captains who would not hand over the guns.

It is not decoration. It is the memory that freedom in this city was defended in the street, person to person. The 91 in this number also comes from that square.
